Preponderance

Brittney Griner, 2015

At one point, not too long ago we were all walking around as virologists. We knew it all or so it seemed. Fast forward to the present and we are all experts in the art of war and diplomatic diplomacy. I swear no one can make this shit up!

The black woman in America has had a rather exigent history. As women, we have often been erased from history, smudged out and rendered only useful for nursing white babies at our bosom with our bodies used for breeding. We were often not able to keep our own children and forced to raise others.

Fast forward to present day, and we see black women being one of the most if not the most educated and well read subgroup in American society. Within my own friend/family group most of the women I know are highly educated (well beyond their high school diplomas, holding degrees and certificates beyond their undergraduate degrees. I have more than one close friend who’s been able to defend doctorial thesis’s). All the while, mothering the tribe, whether it is children they have birthed themselves or children they have chosen to help raise with their time, money and resources.

We have seen black women lead the charge when it comes to grassroots organizing, political activism and moving culture forward, not just for black culture, but American culture at large. I have found myself disgusted and speechless when I read, listened and observed the myriad of commentary as it relates to the release of Brittney Griner.

What is the value of the black woman? When oh when dear reader will we come to a place in the good ‘ole U.S. of A. where we can celebrate the release of a jailed American based on not only an unjust law, but also from being used as a political pawn? She’s home! Let us not question, why her and not him. Rather, lets continue to pray for those whom are still in captivity while also celebrating Griner’s release, for two things can be true at the same time.

How long must the bodies of black women be at the mercy of others? It’s sickening the amount of vitriol that’s being thrown at Brittney Griner because of her release. The fact that a black, gay female athlete was made a priority on the world stage has left many in a tither.

Get over yourself America. It’s about fucking time! Until next time, blessings.
