By the Light of the Candle

It was hot yesterday.

Hot.

The air was thick and for those with asthma or other underlying conditions it was challenging to breathe. One breathed in thick air and breathed out thick air. Local schools in my New England state sent out early dismissal alerts as the heat index rose and rose. This area, like many across the country have a large number of schools with little access to air conditioning (another topic for another day).

The uptick in the temperature has left many school districts scrabbling as they attempt to start a new school year while also keeping students and teachers safe. Parents are finding creative ways to adjust to the unpredictability of scheduling ( I think many of us have learned how to go with the flow the last few years).

Just as I was settling in for an evening of dinner, Scrabble, podcasts and YouTube Kids in the comfort of my air conditioned condo:

BOOM!

Power Outage.

What in the world! This can’t be real, it must be a temporary glitch. I checked my phone battery; fully charged. By the light of the candle I had to find ways to entertain my toddler, as he too has become fully engulfed in the modern luxuries of electricity. We lost natural light way too soon for my liking and with that I was done. We might as well go to sleep. The thought of limited light, the conscious need to conserve my cell phone battery (by not endlessly scrolling online, laughing and sharing memes, reading hilarious comments under trending videos and texting without concern) for an energy source really made me think: What in the world would I do on a daily basis if lighting was limited. How, dear reader, would I spend my time?

What would my evenings look like? How will my family time change to accommodate the lack of light, the inability to stay cool in stifling heat? These thoughts crossed my mind as I drifted off to sleep. What about you dear reader? Have you experienced changes that forced you to change daily routines? How did you handle it?? I am looking forward to your responses. Blessings.

  1. Power outages are a gentle reminder of past times. Times that are too foreign for any of us to ever recall, outside the pages of our history books. Modern luxuries have definitely secured a comfortable existence for me . However, how would my day to day be with limited lighting? I would maximize each day with activities as I do now. Managing my days with work, followed by outside extracurricular activities. Things that wouldn’t be safe to do at night such as hiking, biking, exercise, etc. when there would be no sun, I assume that would conclude my day. At that point I should have already eaten, as well as showered.
