Sula is the name of my favorite female character in literature. The name also has multiple meanings which I’m sure Toni Morrison was fully aware of when she chose that name for her character and the title of her novel itself.

Sula is a quick read but it’s meaty in terms of content. In a nutshell, Sula didn’t do in life what was expected of her as a black woman. She played by her own rules and was unapologetic in her approach to her sexual freedom-pursuit of education and her overall approach to life.
